Why

The Why, When & How to visit...

Wisconsin may be known as the Waterpark Capital of the World and America's Dairyland, but it goes way beyond that to be a great getaway for a cozy and relaxing retreat.

When
How

There are airports scattered throughout the state depending on where you're going.  The largest airport in the state is in Milwaukee (MKE).  Parts are also short driving distance from parts of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Michigan.

Summer is an appealing time to visit for warmer temperatures to enjoy the great outdoors for camping, hiking, water activities, etc. Wisconsin's snowfall, landscape, and coziness make it a great Winter Getaway too.

Where

to stay...

1) Grand Geneva Resort & Spa - Lake Geneva, WI - The resort opened in 1968 as the Lake Geneva Playboy Club Hotel and has been the Grand Geneva Resort for the last 30 years. Spread across 1,300 acres, the Grand Geneva has it all. Indoor and outdoor pools, golf courses, fitness center, tennis courts, salon & spa, 3 restaurants, 2 bars, basketball courts, horseback riding, movie theater, the list goes on and on.  They also have rooms and villas ranging from 1 to 3 bedrooms providing space for groups.  It's onsite ski and sled hills also make it a great winter retreat.  For more information and the ability to book, click here.

2) Saint Kate - Milwaukee, WI - The Saint Kate is The Arts Hotel where art gallery meets hotel.  Rooms are spacious with different designs.  My favorite psychedelic option is the design by Lon Michels. The hotel includes several cool F&B options to enjoy during your stay.  More details on the hotel, along with the ability to book is accessible here.

3) Graduate Madison - Madison, WI - Whenever staying somewhere with a big university, I'm a big proponent of staying in a Graduate Hotel.  The Graduate brand does a fantastic job of designing fun, whimsical hotels that are representative of the area and nearby university. The Graduate Madison is a great example of this.  Filled with lots of Wisconsin charm from canoes to camping, plaids to paddles, the Graduate embraces quintessential Wisconsin style. More details on the hotel, along with the ability to book is accessible here.

4) American Club - Kohler, WI - The American Club dates back to 1918 and was originally built to provide lodging to Kohler Company immigrant employees. Now the American Club serves as a luxury resort and spa and the only AAA Five Diamond Resort in the Midwest outside of Chicago. In addition to its Kohler Waters Spa, the resort has 3 restaurants and access to 2 golf courses. Rooms have a cozy, lux feel perfect for a winter getaway. More details on the hotel, along with the ability to book is accessible here.

5) Lodge Kohler - Green Bay, WI - Expanding the Kohler hospitality brand, Lodge Kohler opened in 2017 directly across from Lambeau Field. The rooms have a classic, luxurious feel to them. The hotel is equipped with an indoor pool, restaurant & bar, rooftop, fitness center and most important a Kohler Waters Spa. More details on the hotel, along with the ability to book is accessible here.

6) The Charmant Hotel - La Crosse, WI - If you find yourself on the Wisconsin / Minnesota border, you'll find maybe the coolest hotel in Wisconsin in La Crosse at The Charmant Hotel. Located a 2.5 hour drive southeast of Minneapolis on the Mississippi River, The Charmant Hotel opened in 2015 in a former candy factory built in 1898.  Charmant is French for charming, playing on La Crosse's French roots, and it certainly is. The hotel has French charm in its decor, including claw foot tubs and a chocolate display case. There's also a restaurant, rooftop terrace, 2 bars, a cafe, and fitness center. More details on the hotel, along with the ability to book is accessible here.

What
Do

to...

1) Enjoy the Great Outdoors - Whether it's enjoying snow in the winter or lakes in the summer, Wisconsin's best attribute is arguably its great outdoors. Aside from snow sports in the winter, one highlight activity is to tour the Ice Castles in Lake Geneva at The Geneva National Resort in place from late January through mid-February.  In the Summer, take in a baseball game with the Brewers or enjoy the live music of Summerfest late June through early July in Milwaukee.  Wisconsin  Dells are also an option to experience the Waterpark Capital of World outdoors or indoors too.

2) Eat at a Supper Club - Nothing says Wisconsin more to me than a classic supper club. In fact, Wisconsin is said to have more than all other states combined with over 260 as of Dec 2022. Whether it's for a Friday Fish Fry, Saturday Prime Rib, or classic old fashion, a supper club has that old school nostalgia that is so inviting. A list of current Wisconsin supper clubs is available here to choose one near where you'll be. A few suggestions include: Hobnob in Racine, Mars Resort in Lake Geneva, and House of Embers in Wisconsin Dells.

3) Tour a Brewery - Grand Rapids, MI may be dubbed Beer City, USA, but Wisconsin was an original contender of beer making dating back to the 1830s. Having created some of the largest names in beers, including Miller, Pabst, and Leinenkugel, Wisconsin holds it own on the beer front. Now home to over 200 breweries, there are plenty to choose from depending on where you'll be. My favorite is the historic Pabst Brewery in Milwaukee. Tour tickets are available here

Eat

Sausage and cheese, specifically cheese curds. Known as America's Dairyland, Wisconsin produces by far the most cheese in the US. Cheese serves as a great accompaniment to sausage, which is also common having a large population of German ancestry in the state.

Drink

Beer, specifically made or originated in Wisconsin. New Glarus is a favorite only available in Wisconsin, known for its Spotted Cow farmhouse ale and Wisconsin Fruit Ale. When visiting a supper club, try a Wisconsin original Pink Squirrel or Brandy Old Fashion.  *If of legal drinking age to drink responsibly
